Statistics reveal that the number of Food Poisoning reported cases have been increasing over time and therefore, and especially because of the very serious possible health consequences, we must all look out for signs when eating out that might suggest there is an increased risk of food poisoning.
What to Watch out for?
There are a number of clues that might help you to decide whether its such a good idea to go ahead with the meal at the restaurant or the purchase of food from a take away:
Looks might be Deceptive?
In other words just because a restaurant looks cosy and inviting from the outside doesn’t mean to say that in the food preparation area everything is rosy!
Nevertheless, it is fair to say that if the restaurateur has not kept on top of hygiene in the bathroom areas then that’s a pretty strong indication that there may well be a problem behind the scenes in the kitchen.
What is the Food Hygiene Rating? (Amazing or not even displayed!)
These days food establishments are by law inspected by the Food Standards Agency who carry out Food Hygiene Ratings and produce a rating according to their overall assessment.
It follows that if the restaurant has been awarded a good rating then the owner will want to let his customers know by placing the results of the inspection in a prominent place in the window.
Equally if no rating is displayed then potentially customers need to be placed on notice that the hygiene rating is at best unknown or at worst not good!
This rating in itself is an important way of the consumer being able to assess the likely risk of suffering with food poisoning.
For peace of mind it is possible to carry out an online search to find out the food hygiene rating for the particular restaurant you are interested in before you visit: ratings.food.gov.uk
How Smart and Presentable are the Staff?
Again the way the staff look can be an important factor when trying to assess the risks involved. Do they look smart? Are they clean? If you are buying food from a takeaway stall then are the staff washing their hands regularly?
Are protective gloves, aprons and or hair nets being worn (although this doesn’t necessarily mean there can be no contamination).
Is the Food at the Temperature You’d Expect?
One of the main causes of food poisoning is eating food which has not been cooked thoroughly and or it has been eaten when it has been left for too long at warm temperatures allowing bacteria to multiply. If the food you are served is luke warm then simply avoid eating it!
Similarly if the meat you are given is meant to be served cold then it should be cold and not tepid!
