The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA)

The CICA is scheme which was set up by the UK Government so that the victims of violent crime, sexual abuse and physical abuse could receive compensation for the injuries if they were victims of crime in either England, Scotland or Wales.

If you instruct us to make an abuse compensation claim, depending on the facts of your claim, we can also make a CICA compensation claim to run at the same time which could give you a better chance of receiving abuse compensation.

In practice we would make a CICA compensation claim and ask the CICA to stay your CICA claim pending the outcome of your abuse compensation claim.

CICA Claim Time Limit

CICA claims are subject to strict time limits and your CICA claim must be received by the CICA within 2 years of the date of the abuse or by your 20th birthday if you were a child at the time of the abuse.

If the 2 year time limit is not met, the CICA has discretion to let us make an Application outside of their time limits and in abuse cases this is frequently allowed.  Once the CICA has made it’s decision about whether to allow your abuse claim to proceed or to award you abuse compensation, their decision is final and cannot be appealed although this does not have any affect all on your civil abuse compensation claim.

For more information go to the CICA website.
