BMW N47 Timing Chain

The BBC 1 Watchdog program on 12^th June 2013 showed that BMW have had significant issues and complaints from BMW owners about total engine failure in the BMW 1-Series, 3-Series and 5-Series vehicles built between 2007 and 2009 due to BMW N47 timing chains.

What is the issue with BMW N47 timing chains?

The issue is that BMW N47 timing chains snap causing the engine to fail.  The BMW N47 timing chain is located at the rear of the engine near the windscreen meaning the complete engine needs removing for it to be checked or repaired which can result in significant labour bills of over £10,000.

After the BMW N47 timing chain snaps it can cause catastrophic damage to the rest of the engine which may mean your car needs a new engine!  BMW’s stance is that the BMW N47 timing chain is at the rear of the engine as it’s part of the engine which should last the lifespan of the car and as such does not need servicing.
